Housing mediation

At CJAM, we understand that stable housing is essential for communities and their residents. Our Landlord-Tenant & Eviction Prevention Project provides mediation services to help tenants and landlords navigate conflicts, resolve disputes, and find solutions that promote housing stability. Whether addressing lease disagreements, unpaid rent, or eviction concerns, our trained mediators create a space for productive dialogue and fair resolutions.

How Mediation Helps

Mediation is a voluntary, confidential process that brings tenants and landlords together to discuss concerns, explore options, and reach mutually acceptable agreements. Our mediators act as neutral facilitators, ensuring both parties are heard and guiding them toward practical solutions that can help prevent eviction and foster positive rental relationships.

Mediation can help with:

Payment plans – Establishing realistic repayment agreements for overdue rent

Lease disputes – Clarifying lease terms and resolving misunderstandings

Repairs & maintenance – Addressing concerns about property conditions

Communication breakdowns – Improving tenant-landlord relationships through dialogue

Eviction prevention – Finding alternatives to eviction that work for both parties

Eviction Prevention Project

The Eviction Prevention Project is a collaborative effort aimed at reducing evictions, preserving housing, and improving long-term housing stability. Partnering organizations include Monroe County Circuit Courts 4 & 8, the Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM), Indiana Legal Services, and Pro Bono Indiana/D-10. Together, they provide holistic support by offering mediation, free legal guidance, and access to community resources. This innovative initiative empowers at-risk renters, fosters collaboration between tenants and landlords, and works to strengthen overall housing security in our community.
